What is a “Special Election”?

A special election is an election held at a time outside the normal election schedule to decide on a specific issue or to fill a vacancy. It is not a regularly scheduled general or primary election.

California’s Statewide Special Election — November 4, 2025

  • This special election will allow voters to decide on Proposition 50, which concerns how congressional districts in California are drawn.

  • Proposition 50 would authorize a new map of congressional districts drawn by the legislature, instead of by the independent commission, for the elections from 2026 through 2030.

  • Key dates: Active registered voters will receive vote-by-mail ballots by October 6. Ballot drop-off sites and early vote-centers will be open ahead of Election Day, November 4.
