Census 2020

Census 2020

The Census is HERE!

The Census is HERE! Check your mail boxes for your invitation to participate in an important and heroic act of solidarity. Counting everyone in our community is urgent and extremely necessary.  For every person not counted in the Census, we could lose $20,000 over the 10 years. Critical health services like responses to the Coronavirus, not to mention childcare, housing, education programs and political representation depend on Census funding.

We’ll all need to do our part to adapt and adjust accordingly as our community grapples with this unprecedented public health emergency. For the first time, the U.S. Census questionnaires will be available by phone or online. It has never been easier to respond on your own. Avoid having a Census enumerator visit your home by responding TODAY! Tell and remind your neighbors. We are all in this together. If your family and neighbors don’t participate, we all lose out.

By using the unique code, given in your invitation, you can fill out the 9-question survey.

You have the power to shape your community!

The 2020 Census will count everyone, including children, in the country by April 1st, your confidential response to the Census questionnaire will help ensure funding and fair representation. Reclaim your power!

The Census survey can be completed online at My2020Census.gov and by phone.

MLK Jr. x DHF Youth Organizing

MLK Jr. x DHF Youth Organizing

DHF has recently expanded our partnership with the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center based in Oakland. Throughout the summer, students underwent an intense bootcamp based on the nonviolent teachings of MLK Jr. that included hands-on civic engagement opportunities, such as door-to-door voter registration in cities throughout the Pacific Coast.

July 8th though the 14th, 2018, about 30 MLK Jr. students stayed at the Cesar Chavez National Monument in Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz and went door-to-door to register voters in Bakersfield. Dolores Huerta visited La Paz to talk to the group about the importance and challenges of organizing. Afterwards, Camila Chavez gave the MLK Jr. students a tour and detailed her childhood experiences growing up in La Paz before it became a national monument.

Call to Action: Press Conference for Nationwide Fast for 2,400+ Urge McCarthy to support Keep Families Together Act!, Wed. 6/27/18, 10am

Please join DHF and local leaders for a press conference to announce a nationwide fast in support of the more than 2,400 children and their families detained in immigration centers and to urge Kevin McCarthy to support the Keep Families Together Act!

WHEN: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 10:00 A.M.

WHERE: Congressman McCarthy’s Office 4100 Empire Drive, Suite 150 Bakersfield, CA 93309

DETAILS: Dolores Huerta participated in a nationwide fast in support of the more than 2,400 children in immigration centers. Kerry Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, passed the fast on to Dolores. After fasting for 24 hours, Dolores passed the fast on to Randi Weingarten, president American Federation of Teachers.

Dolores is calling on Kern County leaders to join the fast for 24 hours each, for a total of 24 days, to support families that have been separated from their children. Participating fasters are encouraged to send their 24 hour food savings to breakbreadnotfamilies.org to be distributed to organizations supporting and providing legal counsel to the families at border seeking refuge in the United States.

The community will call on Congressman Kevin McCarthy to use his role as majority leader to support the Keep Families Together Act and ensure that a fair immigration bill is voted on in the House of Representatives: a bill that will protect the DACA students, refugee families, and guarantee the unification of children and families that have been separated at the US-Mexico Border.

WHEN: Saturday, March 10, 2018

WHERE: Brower Building, 1527 19th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301, 2nd Floor Conference Room

In an effort to register all eligible voters and increase voter turnout in the November elections we plan to train volunteers to talk to thousands of low propensity voters through door to door canvassing in CD 21 and Bakersfield City School District 3.

We want to educate voters about the BCSD 3 special election on April 10th and inform the community of a BCSD 3 Special Election Candidate Forum on March 15, 2018.

In addition, The Schools and Communities First coalition, led by Advancement Project California, California Calls, Common Sense Kids Action, Evolve California, League of Women Voters of California, and PICO California, will begin their signature gathering campaign in Bakersfield. With launches across the state, the coalition plans to recruit and train volunteers to collect the 584,407 signatures needed to place the California Schools and Local Communities Funding Act on the November ballot. The Act would close Proposition 13’s corporate property tax loophole, which deprives Californians of over $11 billion in revenue every year.

Civic Engangement: Grace Parra Gives Warm Shoutout to DHF, Mon. 6/26/17

Civic Engangement: Grace Parra Gives Warm Shoutout to DHF, Mon. 6/26/17

Grace Parra, Latina comedian, host, writer, and actress, graciously gave a welcoming and praising shout out to Dolores Huerta and the DHF. Parra is most recently starring in documentary “Salud! Yes Please.”, where she embarks on a both educational and comedic journey to illuminate the importance of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). She meets with lawmakers, activists, and average Americans who have benefitted from the  ACA, and what they stand to lose with the repealing of the act.  Parra sheds light on the current detrimental issue of health care, while infusing a comedic twist that makes the experience enjoyable, yet preserving the seriousness of the situation.

We thank Grace Parra for her service to the community, as well as her kind words toward the foundation!

Call to Action: 💸 Tell your Legislator, “Make Trump’s billionaire friends pay!”

Donald Trump is planning to give big tax cuts to wealthy corporations and his billionaire friends. What’s worse is that he plans to pay for them with massive budget cuts to essential services— taking away healthcare, education, environmental protections, job training and even Meals on Wheels from millions of Americans.

In California, thanks to a 40 year old loophole, these same wealthy corporations pocket $9 billion a year in property tax breaks, cheating our communities out of billions in investments.

Make It Fair is a bold plan to close Proposition 13’s commercial property tax loophole for the biggest corporations and recover those funds for California.

Will you sign a petition asking state representatives to help make CA more self-reliant under the Trump administration by supporting Make It Fair now? Make It Fair Petition

Throughout the state, We Are California Action Team members are working to make sure corporations pay their fair share but big corporations and the wealthy are already gearing up to spend hundreds of millions to keep the system broken.

We need to let our elected leaders know that we need to Make it Fair so that California becomes more self-reliant in the face of Trump’s attacks.

It’s time to fight back and protect our state by closing this corporate loophole.

Can you take two minutes to sign the petition today? Together we can stop corporations from cheating California. Make It Fair Petition

Let’s make them pay.

We know that when local law enforcement agencies cooperate with immigration enforcement, there is a tremendous cost to public safety. It hinders the ability of local law enforcement to build the strong relationships necessary to public safety and community well-being. Victims and witnesses are less likely to report crime, if they fear that police officers will use this interaction as an opportunity to inquire about their immigration status or that of people they know.

Please help us encourage our elected officials to vote YES on SB 54 and protect the safety and well-being of all Californians by ensuring that state and local resources are not used to fuel mass deportations, separate families, or terrorize our communities.
