Jobs: Youth Coordinator


The DHF seeks to hire an inspirational and responsible Youth Coordinator. The Youth Coordinator will report to the Programs Manager and will be responsible for meeting the expected outcomes of the DHF Youth Leadership Program to build the capacity of youth leaders to address health and education issues through trainings and hands on civic engagement opportunities in Kern County. The Youth Coordinator is responsible for working with youth to identify issues and solutions for alternative discipline policies and practices as well as teen pregnancy prevention. The Youth Coordinator will develop, implement and evaluate activities and programs to engage and coach youth to advocate for policy improvements in schools and local government in Bakersfield and South Kern (Arvin, Lamont, and Weedpatch).


• Cultivate relationships with local youth to determine their needs, concerns, and interests

• Encourage and support youth in establishing DHF youth groups at targeted schools in Bakersfield and South Kern

• Coach and mentor young people participating in issue education, power analysis, data collection, policy planning, and advocacy activities

• Identify potential youth leaders; mentor and cultivate leadership skills

• Provide trainings to increase capacity among Kern County youth to advocate for alternative discipline policies and practices in the Kern High School District and more effective sex education in middle and high schools to decrease teen pregnancy

• Mentor youth as they establish connections and cultivate relationships with decision makers: school administrators, board members, elected officials, and community and business leaders

• Establish and/or strengthen key community partnerships of youth serving organizations and adult allies working together

• Increase number of youth working for policy and practice improvements in schools and public agencies

• Increase the number of youth participating in local and statewide civic engagement campaigns

• Organize events such as town halls and youth summits

• Train youth in messaging and public relations strategies so they may better inform the public of their efforts and accomplishments


• Must have substantial experience working with middle and high school aged youth

• Must have policy and advocacy experience

• Experience implementing positive youth development strategies

• BA or BS from a 4 year university

• Minimum 1 year experience as a community or labor organizer

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Spanish and English)

• Demonstrated success developing and evaluating program models

• Proficient in using technology

• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for DHF’s mission


Location: Bakersfield, California
Full-time, $36,000/year
